Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed in the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba. The term “Aikido” consists of three kanji:
Ai (合) – harmony
Ki (気) – energy or spirit
Do (道) – the way
Together, they translate as “The Way of Harmonizing Energy” or “The Way of the Harmonized Spirit.”
Aikido is distinguished by its philosophy: defending oneself without harming the attacker. Its techniques focus on redirecting and neutralizing an opponent’s energy using circular movements, timing, and flexibility rather than brute force.
More than just a martial art, Aikido combines physical training, mental discipline, and spiritual development—promoting harmony and peace both within the individual and in society.
